Securing a permanent Salesforce role requires more than just technical expertise. It demands a comprehensive skill set, long-term commitment, and the ability to differentiate yourself from contract candidates.

It costs employers, on average, 33% of a worker’s annual salary to hire a replacement if that worker leaves; they won’t be offering a permanent role to just anybody. So, if you want to convince your future boss to invest in you long-term, there are a few things you should consider.

In this competitive landscape, employers are seeking candidates who possess a unique combination of skills, business acumen, and leadership qualities.

So, if you’re ready to take your Salesforce career to the next level, here are the essential skills you need to land a permanent Salesforce role, and stand out from the contract crew…

In-depth Salesforce knowledge

Now, don’t get us wrong, you need this as a contractor as well, but potentially not in such a diverse and well-rounded way.

If you want to land a permanent Salesforce role, you should take the time to explore different Salesforce Clouds, such as Sales Cloud, Service Cloud, and Marketing Cloud. You need to be able to showcase your expertise in configuring and customising Salesforce to meet specific business requirements. Impress employers with your proficiency in managing user access, ensuring data integrity, designing efficient workflows, or leveraging automation processes.

To land a permanent role, you need to show how you will be an invaluable asset to the organisation, with the ability to adapt and expand your skills to meet with the evolving needs of the business. Don’t underestimate the importance of a willingness to learn, it goes far when your prospective employer is considering taking you on long-term.

Strong business acumen

Permanent Salesforce roles require more than just technical skills. If you’re going to be in it for the long haul, employers want to see candidates who can align Salesforce solutions with strategic objectives and drive measurable results.

You can show off your business acumen by analysing existing processes, identifying areas for improvement, and proposing Salesforce enhancements that optimise productivity and enhance customer experiences. If you don’t have any experience in this yet, it’s time to start practicing.

If you can highlight how Salesforce can contribute to long-term business success and showcase your potential to make a meaningful impact, you’ll stand yourself in good stead when it comes to interviewing for a permanent role.

Comprehensive technical skills

If you’re going to entice an organisation to invest in you long-term, you’ve got to be able to show your technical prowess (if the role requires it).

Go beyond basic Salesforce administration and showcase your expertise in Salesforce development, if you’ve got those skills to hand. If you can show your proficiency in Apex, and popular technical elements such as Visualforce and Lightning Components, you’ll become an incredibly attractive prospect to your future boss.

Additionally, you can find ways to demonstrate your knowledge of data management, data modelling, and data integration within the Salesforce ecosystem – data is a theme that runs through any organisation, and every aspect of the Salesforce platform. If you can prove that this is also at the forefront of your mind, you are telling your prospective employer that you won’t cause them any data issues down the line.

Integration and middleware experience

If you’re going to be sticking around, employers highly value candidates with experience integrating Salesforce with other systems and platforms.

If you can get involved with integrations, it’s a highly sought-after skill. The organisation won’t be able to leverage the full effects of Salesforce if they can’t integrate it well with other systems and platforms and streamline their business processes. If you can, showcase your familiarity with Salesforce APIs, web services, and middleware tools, and demonstrate your understanding of popular integration patterns like REST and SOAP. Even if you don’t have a lot of experience in Salesforce integrations, some extracurricular learning will certainly stand you in good stead.

If you’re able to highlight your ability to seamlessly connect Salesforce with other critical systems, you’ll be telling the hiring manager that you can ensure efficient data flow and streamlined business processes.

Effective communication and collaboration skills

These skills are vital for success in permanent Salesforce roles.

You’ll be collaborating closely with stakeholders from various backgrounds, including business users, management, and cross-functional teams. Showcase your ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear and concise language, bridging the gap between technical jargon and business requirements. Even if your role is more functional than technical, remember not everyone has the same in-depth knowledge of Salesforce as you do – otherwise they wouldn’t be hiring you.

Try to highlight your collaborative nature, and your ability to build strong relationships with team members and stakeholders, and you’ll be one step closer to a permanent role.

Leadership and project management abilities

The longer you are with an organisation, the more career progression you should experience. If you don’t, then that’s a whole other topic in itself, which we’ll leave for another day.

It’s likely you’ll have the opportunity to move towards leadership and management positions, so if you’re trying to bag that permanent role, any evidence you have of these skills will definitely boost your application. Practice organising and prioritising tasks for yourself and others, effectively manage resources, and navigate projects from start to finish. If you can provide examples of these when it comes to applying and interviewing for your ideal permanent role, with an explanation of the positive impact this had on your previous or current organisation, then you’ll be positioning yourself as a good long-term investment.

If you can hone these skills, in the relevant context for your particular domain of Salesforce, you’ll place yourself at the top of the candidate shortlist for that perfect permanent role. Remember, it’s not just about technical expertise, it’s about demonstrating a well-rounded skill set, aligning with business objectives, and showcasing your ability to lead and contribute to long-term success.
